Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe’s Dad Is A Bum—Both Figuratively And Literally

So we’ve all heard the stories about delinquent dads and athletes and how they left their future millionaire kids. But this story about England star striker Jermain Defoe and his dad left us kind of triste. This picture is of Defoe’s dad, Jimmy—but don’t let the nice coat/scarf combo fool you. Jimmy is a guy making $130 a week in benefits who hops around East London to visit either soup kitchens or betting shops. It’s a far cry from the phatty life Jermain leads, what with his recent transfer over to Tottenham and the £15 million contract that went with it. So what’s so new about this story? That Jimmy loves and is so proud of his son that he goes about bragging to everyone about him. He even put $10 of his weekly $130 check on a wager for Jermain to score in his Spurs re-debut. And like most things in his life, it failed.

“It’s a pitiful existence—a million miles from what Jermain has worked hard for and earned. His daily routine is one of booze, soup kitchens and ambling round betting shops… He is proud of Jermain—but pride doesn’t buy you your next meal.”

In Jermain’s defense, he is close to his dad. He once introduced him to David Beckham and bought him a Gucci watch… which Jimmy eventually sold to buy some crack rocks. I guess you can’t blame anyone in this f’d up story.
