Ever since Troy Aikman was released by Big D in 2001, the Cowboys have been looking for a big arm to replace their three-time winning Super Bowl QB. And the lord knows the Quincy Carters of the world weren’t the answer. So maybe that’s why they’ve clung on to the idea of Tony Romo as a savior, the one who will ring prominiance back to Dallas. Because honestly, he’s shown flashes of brilliance when things are rolling along perfectly. When. Other times, whether it be the team chemistry or just his mental or physical gaffes, he turns into his shell and bangs out one liners like this to the press after a win against the Bengals.
“Maybe it’s because you never played in the NFL,” Romo said in the hallway outside the Cowboys’ locker room.
Wow. Well, the only person who can really understand Romo is Aikman, now an announcer for FOX. And he really wants to tell everyone that Romo is a good guy that can lead Dallas… of only Troy could find his keys to get things rolling.
“I think maybe things happened so quickly for Tony in terms of obscurity to all of a sudden national spotlight that he hasn’t fully grasped what being the Cowboys quarterback is all about,” Aikman said. “And you don’t go to Cabo the week before a playoff game. You just don’t do it.
“It didn’t take away from his preparations. I know that. I mean, everything he says is I think accurate. I don’t think that had any bearing… But to say, ‘I don’t worry about perception,’ you better worry about perception, because it’s a big part of making it through some very difficult times.”
It’s not the perception of the fans or media that should concern Romo. It’s the perception inside the locker room.
Yes, because one man can handle the malcontents in that place. Surely it’ll only get better once rumored soon-to-be Cowboy Ray Lewis gets there… right?
