Felipe Massa Condition Stable But Life Threatening After Formula One Accident UPDATE: He’s talking and moving!

<p>Felipe Massa is now in “life threatening” but stable condition after a Formula One accident on Saturday in the qualifiers for the Hungarian Grad Prix. The driver suffered multiple skull fractures after a freak accident in which a part from another car struck his head, giving him a concussion. Doctors are now keeping the Ferrari driver under sedation to prevent further swelling in his brain, and are confident he will survive but perhaps never drive again due to an injury to his eye. </p>
<p>We wish Massa the best of luck since these types of brain injuries are never fun to deal with and always carry with them a certain type of unrest. The brain does what it wants when injured, and you just kind of have to sit back and pray that it doesn’t feel like suddenly violently swelling again without any indication, but at least his doctors seem confident in his recovery for now. The good news is that he’s apparently able to move now, having been brought in and out of sedation by doctors to perform motor tests. Really, it’s a miracle he survived the initial impact, having slowed his car to a mere <em>110 miles per hour</em> when he hit the wall.</p>
<p>At any rate, F1 has done a pretty bang up job of hunting down and deleting all the videos of the crash, because heaven forfend anyone gets the idea this sort of thing can be dangerous, but here’s some video of ol’ Felipe in happier times (happier times being, of course, smaller crashes that didn’t require the removal of sections of skull.) God speed, brother.</p>
