They finally made an honest man out of him yesterday, as Cristiano Ronaldo officially passed his physical, signed his contracts and emerged for the first time in whites to greet 80,000 screaming Real Madrid fans. Adopting the number 9 jersey of Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano, Ronaldo greeted the largest turnout for an unveiling ceremony probably in forever and ever. The crowd topped the 75,000 that came out for Diego Maradona’s arrival in Napoli in 1984 and the 55,000 that greeted fellow Real summer acquisition Kaka last Tuesday. The 24-year old striker announced, “I have fulfilled my childhood dream to play for Real Madrid,” because owner Florentino Pérez apparently pays him £1.3 million every time he says it.

You really have to hand it to Real Madrid. After shelling out £200 million over the last month or so for Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema, people are expecting a big show and this preliminary one didn’t disappoint. The jaw-gaping spectacle certainly beats the hell out of the American version of these things, where the best you can hope for is thirty reporters crammed in a media room with either Shaq making jokes about butt-fucking his GM or AI doing that “Practice?” routine one more time.
