Dia De Dos Santos: Mexico Beats US 5-0 In Gold Cup Final

The US Men’s National got resoundingly bitch slapped by Mexico in the Gold Cup final on Sunday, losing 5-0 at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands. Led by Giovani Dos Santos and Carlos Vela, pictured below, respectively, Mexico defeated the US MNT on US soil for the first time in 10 years. They now own 5 Gold Cups to the Americans’ 4.
As we’ve mentioned before, matches between the Los Estados and El Tri can be a bit of a conflict for those of us with Mexican roots born in the US. However, during this unqualified Mexican conquest, it was hard to feel any respect or esteem for the Americans, whose sloppy play led to a second half shit storm of FIVE goals scored by FIVE different Mexicans.
Check the highlights here:
As you just saw, the first goal came off a questionable penalty kick that was drawn by an aggressive Gio Dos Santos. The second came off a Mexican bombardment nailed in at close range off a rebound shot by GDS. The third was made possible by a brilliant penetrating assist to Carlos Vela by, you guessed it, Giovani DOS SANTOS. Vela and Jose Castro hooked up for the 4th goal and we were passed out on the couch for the 5th. Hey, tequila day turned into tequila weekend, homes.
In any event, Mexico’s historic Gold Cup win proved they are back and led by a 20 year old soon-to-be superstar named Johnny Two Saints. But the tables may turn again quickly as the US will bring its big guns to face El Tri in the World Cup qualifier on August 12 in Mexico City. We shall see. In the meantime, let’s check a Mexi-centric gallery of the festivities.
