Update: Google is up and running as usual now. Still interested in seeing how many of you were affected by the outage.

Can you access your Gmail? Neither can we. Google Gmail is down and the whole world is going apeshit over it. Seconds into the outage blogs and newspapers, yes even the NYT, began to speculate why it happened.

Google’s App Status Dashboard, which informs on the state of its various applications clearly shows that Gmail is undergoing a “Service Outage.”

And every time we try to reload mail.google.com on the office it shows a “Temporary Error 500″ message.

On its official Google Gmail Blog the mailites over at Moutain View, California had this to say about the tech apocalypse:

We know many of you are having trouble accessing Gmail right now — we are too, and we definitely feel your pain. We don’t usually post about minor issues here (the Apps status dashboard and the Gmail Help Center are usually where this kind of information goes). Because this is impacting so many of you, we wanted to let you know we’re currently looking into the issue and hope to have more info to share here shortly.

The good news is that if you have IMAP or POP you should still be able to access your mail while the service outage is fixed.

The folks at the Google Gmail blog add, “We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and will get Gmail back up and running as soon as possible.”

Are any of you also encountering problems with Gmail?

I assumed it was my crappy internet; glad to see it was universally inconvenient!
