Let’s break that down a bit. We’ve all heard that women are universally picky and choosy when it comes to finding a man. At least until they turn 30. And we are told that men will fuck anything that moves from the day they grow their man dick till the day they die. What Finkel and Eastwick seem to prove is that part of that widespread, forced-on-you-since-birth acculturation pushing men and women to play the roles of predator and prey, respectively, can be counteracted by a simple bit of flip flopping.

The scientists set up a bunch of college kids in a speed dating experiment and found that the “speed daters who approached their partners relative to those who stayed sitting would experience a greater romantic desire and chemistry toward their partners,” and were more likely to pull the trigger on another date. The people rotating from table to table were less selective than those sitting, regardless of their gender. They didn’t choose to whom they rotated, it was all about the act of the approach that made either the man or woman want it more. And if they were sitting they were likely to just want to chill.

Given that men are generally expected, if not required (as at professional speed-dating events), to approach in romantic contexts, perhaps this factor alone could be sufficient to explain why women tend to be more selective than men. The present results are at least partially consistent with this possibility.
