Brazil Short Dress

Geisy Arruda is being let back into Universidade Bandeirantes (UNIBAN Brasil) in suburban Sao Paulo after being expelled for wearing a miniskirt that caused a riot. If you haven't heard the incredible story and seen the appalling video footage over at Anyguey, prepare to be irate. The video shows about 700 students heckling Arruda as she walked through the halls in the dress pictured above. The students chanted, "Puta! Puta!" but this account, from Brazilian journalist Edison Bernardo DeSouza at Brazzil Magazine is even more chilling.
Dr. Rubens, Managing development Professor at Universidade Bandeirantes, went into Geisy's rescue, but had to lock her up inside another room, as the rage increased and he feared more attacks. He begged Geisy to put on a teacher's gown, so she could leave the premises in peace. At that point 700 students were already packed up and lined up outside the classroom, spread all over the university ramps, screaming: "Let her out Professor, we want to rape her".
What are these kids, Muslims? (We went to Morocco once and were hissed at for just being a western woman. We had on long sleeves and pants and everything.) If that isn't crazy enough, the school, who originally promised to punish the mob, decided instead to expel Arruda via an advertisement in the newspaper which stated that she had caused the riot because she chose to dress provocatively. Fortunately, with UNIBAN putting their insolence on such prominent display, the federal government had no choice but to intervene. Minister Nilcéa Freire from the Special Secretariat of Policies for Women demanded an explanation for their decision as well as further information on what was being done to punish the students involved in the riot. Meanwhile the Ministry of Education opened a case against the school. To which the university promptly responded, "Oh. Then, Miss Arruda can come back to class." Not bloody likely. Arruda is considering transferring. You think? Two other colleges have offered Arruda full scholarships, meanwhile, Brazzil Magazine reports that in 2009, the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture listed UNIBAN as as one of the worst universities in the country on a list that includes 500 institutions.

How the hell can any Brazilian man (any straight man, really) be upset with a (relatively) attractive woman in a miniskirt? For fuck's sake! They watch porn every day and they're scandalized by that?! It's clear it's not about so-called sexual "morals" (Brazilian men have none), but about good ol-fashioned anti-female bigotry. I mean, rape threats? Jesus. If a man had dressed "provocatively" you think there would have been a riot? No. He could have been wearing nothing but a damn thong and there would have been nothing like that and he sure wouldn't be blamed for it. If I could have my way, women would feel totally safe and respected walking around topless. Hey, I've seen morbidly obese men with giant man-boobs so I don't know why we shouldn't allow women to let their girls out in the sun.
