interviewSammy Sosa wants you to back off! In an interview with Univision’s Primer Impacto, the Dominican ball player addressed the issue of his lighter skin, a topic we have covered extensively, and whether or not this has anything to do with shying away from his Latin American roots.

Slammin’ Sammy does not understand why people are making a big deal of this. His skin was dark after playing many years in the sun, and now he’s taking good care of his epidermis by putting on a magical cream from Europe that smooths it out and lightens its pigmentation. We’re not sure if he’s playing dumb, or if he’s genuinely not aware that his fans, particularly Latin Americans, might take issue with what appears to be Sosa whitewashing his appearance.

“I’m not a racist,” he stated. Don’t be so defensive, Sammy! We’re not accusing you of hating on people of color, we’re accusing you of wanting to be white. There’s a difference there. It’s interesting that Sosa keeps denying the accusations of wanting to be white, especially since every time he’s been asked a forward question, he hesitates and then skirts around it. This was the case when he was asked about his green contact lenses.

alg_sosa-then-now-450x2641 Ever the opportunist, Sammy says that in a way, he’s glad the condition of his skin has garnered such attention. One of the upsides is that people have been wondering about the product he’s using, and he plans on capitalizing on that curiosity by marketing in the United States. Sammy, after all, is a self-professed businessman, and now he knows he can exploit the insecurities of self-hating Latinos by selling them a product that will make them white.

The highlight of the interview came when Tony Dandrade asked him whether his skin was lighter in other parts of his body. Sosa blushed, and then laughed it off by saying that, no, he only applies the cream on his face, and that it would be a serious health issue if he were to rub the cream elsewhere. This makes us wonder whether the cream gives you a burning sensation when it touches the skin, in which case we have to side with Sammy. That would not be very pleasant.

The second half of Sammy’s explanation will air later on today, and we’ll have it up for you, subtitled and all. In the meantime, check out the first part right here:

Okay, saw the video now. Sammy’s definitely gone cray-cray. Lighter skin, green color contacts, relaxed hair. He’s won the self-hate triple play.

People are nuts. Did he thing no one would notice or something? How old is he? 40 something? You have to have some serious issues to completely change your appearance like that. I kind of feel bad for him now.

contacts, relaxed hair, lighter skin and a rumored nose job years ago! Before, it was just A-Rod that was a disgrace to us Dominicanos, now Sammy has joined the ranks :(

It is sad that so many people of color actually spend money and time to look more white—I am white and don’t understand it! What a site though in bed–being fucked by a white head with a latin tool!

You don’t understand why a person of color would try to become more white? Really? And then you follow that up by referring to the disparity inherent in having a “white face” and a “Latin tool”? Oh man.

Oh! He had to wait on that last question. tsk tsk, Sammy… first the corked bat, then this. I’ll take Alfonso Soriano and his constant striking out and that damn hop when he catches a fly ball any day…

It has nothing to do with Latin American roots. If Sosa has, in fact, lightened his skin, it’s his black roots he’s shying away from. Plus he’s from the Dominican Republic, which is in the Caribbean/West Indies, not Latin America.

The hell the DR isn’t part of Latin America! If you look on the map there really isn’t a “Latin America” designation like there is with the “Caribbean” or “South America” simply because it’s a cultural term, not a geographic region (Just as the definition of Latino is not an ethnicity but being part of a culture, anchored by either Spanish or Portuguese). Yes, Latin America happens to include part of North America (Mexico) and basically all of South America, but it’s tied together by Latino culture, which the DR is certainly part of.

Latino doesn’t refer to culture. That’s something that Caribbeans like to say. It refers to people, with ancestors from Latin America, regardless of what culture they have now. That’s why they say Latin America AND the Caribbean.

DR is part of the Caribbean/West indies.

This interview is so nuts. This man obviously has issues, and sadly, he wants to sell that cream to others who have issues too!

its a non issue, he’s out of the limelight and knew people would question this, he’s just trying to get amarillistas (news shows) to talk about him.

How stupid does he think we are? He temporarily had black skin from playing outside in the sun? Please.

What a disgrace! I can only hope that those in the DR (and elsewhere) who harbor similar racist views of self-hatred look at this fool of a man and realize what a travesty it is to hate yourself like that.

He reminds me of those black Dominicans who deny that they are black by calling themselves Dark Latino.

I saw Univision did a poll about people’s opinion: 50% say he’s going crazy and 45% support him. I see clearly Univision is lying about this poll!!!!!!! Hasta el mismo confirma que esta usando una crema que le aclara la piel. Definitivamente Sammy esta desajustado mentalmente.

  10. I like how they used the Tony, who happens to be the darkest reporter they have to interview him. It’s great!

I agree, no one accused him of being a racist. It’s quite obvious, he does not want to be his natural skin color. Yes many years in the sun can damage the skin(without sun protection of course), but im sure they are treatments to repair the damage done without changing your skin color. Even without treatments, just staying out the sun is a start. It’s also interesting that the cream is European. European standard views(light skin, light eyes, straight hair) on beauty appear to be universal standards regarding attractiveness. And he is an example of someone changing themselves to fit into this old and ridiculous standard.
