UPDATE: Steve Job announced that Apple will be giving away free cases to every iPhone 4 user that wants one. This is Apple's solution to the much talked about antenna problem.
Speaking at a press conference at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California, the man in charge of the tech giant opened his press conference by saying that they are not perfect and are prone to making mistakes. This was as close to an apology as he would give during the event.
Following his quasi-admittance of guilt, Jobs went on the defensive, citing that reception issues are not unique to the iPhone 4, that every smart phone available on the market is prone to losing signal bars when held a certain way. He then moved on to put blame on the media for blowing the issue out of proportion. Not exactly an apology, is it?
After the turteneck-wearing CEO was done pointing fingers, he offered the following solution:
"We think this has been so blown out of proportion... it's fun to have a story, but it's not fun on the other side. So here's what we're going to do to make our users happy. The first part is the software update, that fixes the way the bars report and other bugs, that's out now. Second, people said the bumper fixes everything... 'why don't you give everybody a case'? Okay -- we'll give you a free case."
So there you have it, folks. The fix to the problem that Apple said didn't exist is a free case for everyone who purchased the iPhone 4. Customers can apply for them at the company's website starting tomorrow and this offer will be valid until September 30th. Also, if you've already purchased a bumper, you will be refunded your money.
In the end, Apple's decision to fix the problem by giving out free bumpers seemed forced, like it was a necessary evil the company had to do in order to appease the clamoring masses, instead of the benevolent corporation that "cares about its customers" that they tried to make themselves out to be. We're glad there's finally a solution, but their image has been tarnished nonetheless and we'll be less inclined to drink the Apple kool-aid from now on.

Steve Jobs, speaking to a small group of reporters admitted that Apple was wrong. Stay tuned for more updates from the press conference.
