Nike has a new shoe called "SB Tecate Dunk" and it's obviously inspired by the Mexican beer Tecate. (Well, at least the color scheme is.) Should we be offended that yet another corporation has, like a greedy little b*tch, assimilated a cultural icon -- in this case, the Mexican working-class PBR equivalent Tecate -- just to take our money? Or should we be proud about Tecate's recognition by an international "cool" footwear brand? Take it to the comments, kids.

ReplyIt's cause it's soooo light. So instead of pissing it out, you fart it out.

ReplyYou wouldn't know it was "inspired" by a Tecate can unless someone said so. It's very subtle, and companies/artists find inspiration everywhere, this seems inoffensive. Is Tecate in on this? Either way, it's not like it's a special pair of jaguar-print high tops named Air Tenochtitlan with little feather headdresses on the side, guacamole-colored shoelaces and an Aztec clock on the sole.
ReplyAccording to the interwebs, Nike released a Heineken-inspired shoe some years back and Heineken demanded that it be pulled from stores. So this might be unofficial. But would Tecate complain? Probably not, right?
ReplyIt's true, we could also look at the fact that Tecate is a product too. And I guess this is a better color scheme than say, Corona's.
ReplyTecate is not as big as Heineken so I'm sure they'd love the free publicity.
ReplySubtile? No. It's got all the elements and colors of the Tecate can. Anyone who is familar with the Tecate brand will make the connection immediately.
ReplyI'm offended ... as a beer drinker.
Replyeven if it was based on the tecate can, why would anyone be offended by it? the only one who could complain I guess would be cerveceria cuauhtemoc, for using the term 'tecate' and the same color combination?
