By now you may have heard that the DREAM Act died over the weekend from a Senate vote of 55-41. The bill needed 60 votes to advance in the Senate, but it seems that the conservative values of hard work and self-reliance do not extend to brown kids whose parents brought them here when they were too young to have any say. Five Dems–Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Jon Tester of Montana, Max Baucus of Montana, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, and Ben Nelson of Nebraska– all voted against the measure while three Republicans– Richard Lugar of Indiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Robert Bennett of Utah–voted for it.

Meanwhile, gays earned the right to serve openly in the military with the Senate repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell. Maybe because the people fighting for that cause included a lot of white men. Sorry, but we're pretty disgusted with this country right about now.

This is why politics sucks for Latinos. Democrats will use this vote to campaign for Latino votes, saying GOP blocked Dream (even though it is true that if all D's voted for it the law would have passed). GOP keeps the anti-Latino wing in their base happy and will use the vote as evidence they are tough on immigration/terrorism. Both parties win: score points with their bases and will take their own moral high ground on the issue. Latinos and those that need this law most are the losers here. Moral victories do not protect against deportation. Many students are left in a very precarious position, and legislators will move on to their next political game.
