President Obama just spoke on immigration reform in El Paso, Texas where audience members booed the border wall. The President mentioned the wall while listing the many Republican mandates his party has met in hopes of reaching an agreement on broader immigration reform, prompting boos from those in attendance. "Even though we've answered these concerns, I gotta say I suspect there are still going to be some who are trying to move the goal posts on us one more time," he said. "Maybe they'll need a moat. Maybe they'll want alligators in the moat."
The President went on to site statistics on the increased number of illegal guns, money and drugs seized at the border during his administration. "So, El Paso, the question is whether those in Congress who previously walked away in the name of enforcement are now ready to come back to the table and finish that work that we've started."
The President's speech today is part of the Democratic party's attempt to use immigration reform to gain support for the 2012 presidential election. Though Barack Obama has completed none of the promises he made to Latino immigration reform supporters in 2008, and everything to assuage the concerns of anti-immigration supporters, he would like you to blame the opposing party for that.
"We're going to keep on fighting for the DREAM Act," he told audience members, claiming, as he did during his Town Hall on Univision in March, that his administration has focused on deporting criminals and not families or students who are trying to make a better life for themselves. "We're going to keep up the fight for reform. But that's where you come in. This change ultimately has to come from you–the American people. I'm asking you to add your voices to this debate," the President continued, calling on voters to sign up at his website–whitehouse.gov–to help with the need for greater comprehensive reform.

This has to be the most insulting political manuevering there is. Obama and the Democrats know that they are the ONLY GAME IN TOWN for those of us hoping for a reasonable approach to immigration reform. I mean, really, what are we going to do go the GOP on this issue? HA! This is not a knock on the GOP, mind you, at least they are honest about their position on immigration (they don't really like it!). The Dems (and lets be honest, Pres. Obama) on the other hand, will continue tell us what we want to hear in the run up to election day and then claim they don't have the political capital to get any of it done. Honestly, there's plenty of political capital available on this issue just not any political will.
ReplyI have to agree. This was a bunch of pandering to liberals who really have no other interest but to criticize the other side. Obama has done nothing for Dems who are pro-immigration reform and everything for Repubs who hate Mexicans.
ReplyI completely agree, too. It's really frustrating to have the Democrats to keep taking advantage of the Latino vote and not ever do anything for them. But like you said, who else are you going to vote for? They don't want to help, they just want the votes.
