85-year-old Gabriel Garcia Marquez, AKA Gabo, might have Alzheimer's disease. Plinio Apuleyo Mendoza, Gabo's childhood friend who wrote El Olor A La Guayaba, a book that details conversations between Mendoza and Marquez, told Kien&Ke he hasn't spoken to Gabriel in years but that the last time he tried, Rodrigo, Gabriel's son, told him "he [Gabriel] has to see you otherwise he can't tell who he's speaking to."

Mendoza went on to say Gabriel's memory was spotty but still sort of in order:

"[Gabriel] would would forget certain things and ask 'When did you arrive?' 'Where are you staying?' and then repeat himself. Later we had breakfast and he was able to remember very old things from 30 or 40 years ago."

Carmen Balcells, Gabriel's literary agent, had a similar story:

"A lo of my friends also commented on the issue, confirming he would interrogate them. I suspect he has a formula; if he doesn't recognize you he won't say 'Who are you?" but he'll make generic questions."

According to the Argentine newspaper La Nacion, Gabriel's immediate family, including his mother and brother, previously suffered from Alzheimer's disease, and thus there's a good chance Gabo might be affected by it too.

Hey, Mario Vargas Llosa, I bet you feel pretty bad about punching Gabo in the face right about now, huh?
