Guanabee Reviews New Kumbia Queers Record "Pecados Tropicales"

Today is shaping up to be a fine day. Remember last week when I posted a preview of the new Kumbia Queers record Pecados Tropicales [Tropical Sins]? Well today a full digital copy of the entire record was delivered to my inbox. It's like Christmas in the middle of August!

It's been two years since Kumbia Queers released their second record, La Gran Estafa Del Tropipunk, and their latest full-length LP is just as exciting as its predecessor. Probably because las Queers are still the only all-girl cumbia band out there with punkish, riot-grrrl aesthetics -- that I know of, at least -- and not just some run-of-the-mill rock band. 

"Kumbia Punk," the opening track, sums up the chunk of their sound and attitude (Click here if the player below doesn't load):

This much is clear: Kumbia Queers is here to party. They wanna come over to your place, drink your beer, hook up with your girlfriends, and piss on the floor before taking off to the afterparty. And they're no lightweights; Pecados Tropicales comes with 15 full-length songs! Most impressing is the fact that there's no filler. Sure, some songs ("Mientes") are a lot more solid than others ("El Resplandor"), but even the few "eh" ones managed to hold my attention.

Lyrically they're all over the place but there's a noticeable emphasis on heartbreak and finding in love, which are popular genre themes. Mexican, Colombian, and villera-styled cumbias can all be heard in their sound, but there's more: in tracks like "Cantinera" and "Patricia" Kumbia Queers successfully deliver some surf-ska and even dance pop. You'll also find a punk-ish cover of "Caballo Viejo" and a very interesting collaboration ("In The Mood For Love") with the Berlin-based band Scream Club.

With mix of edgy, fun, and fresh melodies & rhythms, Pecados Tropicales is a near-perfect party record.
